[DAWN] Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali on Saturday lashed out at Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) for what he said was use of "inappropriate language" with regards to the Pakistain Army and Rangers.

Pakistan election campaigning ends
2013-05-11
An especially violent spate of killings, kidnappings and bombings marred the run-up to Pakistan's nationwide election, capped by the abduction of the son of a former prime minister as he was rallying supporters on the last day of campaigning before the historic vote.
In other words, Pakistain as usual...
Saturday's election marks the first time in Pakistan's military coup-riddled history that a civilian government has finished its term and will hand over power to another. But the significance of the occasion has been overshadowed by the relentless violence targeting mostly liberal, secular parties.

Saturday's election marks the first time in Pakistan's military coup-riddled history that a civilian government has finished its term and will hand over power to another.
More than 125 people have been killed by a series of bombings and shootings that can mostly be traced to Taleban militants who have vowed to disrupt a democratic process they view as un-Islamic. Separatists in the southwestern province of Baluchistan have also attacked candidates and their supporters across the political spectrum.

There was no claim of responsibility for the abduction of 25-year-old Ali Haider Gilani, but suspicion immediately fell on the Taliban. Gilani is running for a provincial assembly seat under the banner of the Pakistan People's Party, one of three parties the Taleban has singled out for retribution because they supported military operations against Taleban insurgents in northwestern Pakistan.

His father, Yousuf Raza Gilani, is a longtime member of the PPP who served as prime minister while many of those military operations were carried out.

The younger Gilani was leaving an election event in the city of Multan in southern Punjab province when attackers pulled up in a car and motorcycle, sprayed the area with bullets, threw him into one of the vehicles and drove off, officials and witnesses said.

The former prime minister has been campaigning heavily in Multan to help his three sons, who are all running for elected office in the district, but he was not at the rally when his son was taken. Appearing shaken, the elder Gilani said in televised comments that two bodyguards were killed in the attack, but he did not know whether his son was wounded.

"His two guards were shielding him, and they died," the former premier said. "I urge all of my party supporters to remain peaceful and participate in the vote."

Gilani was forced out of office last summer by the Supreme Court after refusing to pursue a corruption case against President Asif Ali Zardari.

Although his ouster from office meant he could not run in this election, the Gilani family is still heavily represented in the Multan district races. In addition to the son who was abducted, the former prime minister has two sons running for national assembly seats.

The Pakistan People's Party, along with the Karachi-based Muttahida Quami Movement and the Awami National Party, have been singled out for attack by the Taleban . All were part of the outgoing government during a time when there were repeated military offensives against Taleban militants in the tribal areas.

The threat has forced all three to severely curtail their election events. Instead of the large, outdoor rallies the PPP used in 2008 to whip up support among thousands of voters, the party has relied on television and newspaper ads and smaller indoor gatherings where security is more manageable. In northwest Pakistan, candidates from the Awami National Party held election events inside private homes under heavy security or reached out to voters via social media and by telephone.

Condemning the murder, the co-ordination committee of the MQM called it a continuation of the evil conspiracy aimed at destabilising the city's peace.

SC suggests door-to-door verification of Karachi votes

and Attock, although they had been living in the city for 10 to 15 years.

During proceedings on Wednesday, the chief justice said that a number of complaints were being reported regarding electoral lists. Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry suggested that help could be sought from the armed forces for verification of voters' lists in Bloody Karachi. The CJ said that the law and order situation in Bloody Karachi may also be resolved if Rangers and Army personnel took part in door-to-door verification of votes. He added that political parties should also be kept away from the process of voters' list preparation.

During the previous hearing in the case last week, the bench had allowed the MQM's request to join the proceedings as a co-respondent and a party in the case after the petitioners did not raise any objection.

The court had asked the Election Commission (ECP) to find out how many votes had been registered on the same addresses provided in the electoral rolls of 2002, 2005 and 2007 in Bloody Karachi. The ECP was also asked to check if the votes of people were recorded according to their residential addresses; how many people had applied for shifting their votes outside Bloody Karachi; how many voters had been approached and under which law the votes had been shifted out of the city and the legal status of such a decision.

Counsel for Jamat-e-Islami, Rasheed A Rizvi told the court about a house in Karachi where 653 votes had been registered.
The Election Commission on the direction of apex court submitted report about the voters' lists of Bloody Karachi.

The Supreme Court had asked the Election Commission to find out how many voters were verified and how many of them were de-listed or transferred back to their native towns.

Provincial Election Commission Sindh informed the court that 32,281 voters were transferred to their permanent addresses.

Counsel for Jamat-e-Islami, Rasheed A Rizvi told the court about a 120-yard house in Bloody Karachi where 653 votes had been registered.

Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) counsel, Senator Farooogh Nasim proposed that the court should refer the matter to Election Commission which should make a decision after consultation with all stakeholders.

The Chief Justice remarked the Army and Ranger's services could be acquired as the court has already given a judgement in Workers Party case.

He observed that country's economy could suffer if peace is not restored in Bloody Karachi.

Altaf condemns Shia killings; criticizes judicial system
2012-09-02
[Dawn] Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain on Saturday deplored the brutal killings of people belonging to Shia Moslem community, DawnNews reported.

He termed the gruesome bloodshed a wanton act of slaying the humanity itself.

Addressing a conference organised to promote harmony between different sects of Islam, the MQM chief said that enemies of the country will take advantage by creating rift between Sunnis and Shias.

Assailing the judicial system, he said that acquitting murderers over lack of evidence can not be justified for having 'free judiciary' in the country.

Hussain said that the innocent people belonging to the Hazara community in Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
were being subjected to genocide, and targeted for their association with Shia school of thought.

"MQM leaders and religious scholars believing in sectarian harmony and unity among Moslems had called for stopping these acts of savagery, which could not be done. Seven more innocent people were bumped off in Quetta after their identities were verified," he condemned.

Hussain said that every peace-loving citizen of the country besides members of the Hazara community is questioning the existence of government, and law-enforcing in stopping criminals prowling freely to target the specific community.

The MQM chief extended sympathies to the grieving families who lost their loved ones and expressed unity and solidarity with them.

(JD) staged a rally outside the Bloody Karachi Press Club to express anger against the NATO strike.

The parties demanded that the government stop the logistic facility for NATO supplies permanently and shut down US bases across the country.

They termed the raid 'an attack on Pakistain's illusory sovereignty'.

JD leaders Maulana Saifullah Khalid, Naveed Qamar, Prof Mehmoodul Hasan Asad and Hafiz Kalimullah, JI leaders Asadullah Bhutto and Nasrullah Shajee and Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam leader Qari Usman and others who addressed the rally asked the government to stop 'politics of demands' and start thinking over a common strategy to counter US threats which they said were mounting.

They said that Washington had never been a friend of Islamabad and alleged that it was promoting terrorism in the country in collaboration with India.

The leaders also criticised the government's decision to grant the status of Most Favoured Nation to India and described it as 'detrimental to our national interests'. They said that the decision would cast a negative impact on the national economy.

"The enthusiastic response given by the public to the stability and solidarity day proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Pak nation is capable of giving a befitting reply to any aggression on its borders," said MQM leader Dr Farooq Sattar while addressing a large crowd of party workers and supporters at the party headquarters, known as Nine Zero.

He paid tribute to the officers and personnel of Pakistain Army who bit the dust in the unprovoked attack.

He said that it should be made clear to the world that any adventure against the country's illusory sovereignty would be strongly dealt with.

Mr Sattar said the challenge should be converted into an opportunity and the nation should get united to make the defence of the country impregnable.

He asserted that the MQM would not shy away from offering any sacrifices for the country.

He said that the entire nation was firmly behind the armed forces.

On the instruction of MQM chief Altaf Hussain, the national flag was hoisted at the residences of party workers and supporters, buildings and public places.

Zulfiqar Mirza resigns from Sindh Assembly, blasts MQM
2011-08-29
[Dawn] Senior Pakistain Peoples Party (PPP) leader and Sindh Senior Minister Dr Zulfiqar Ali Mirza on Sunday announced his resignation from his party post as vice president of PPP Sindh chapter as well as membership of the Sindh Assembly.

Addressing a crowded presser at the Bloody Karachi Press Club, he expressed serious reservations on
the policy of government about the law and order situation in Bloody Karachi.

He said he would continue to work as an ordinary party worker. He harshly criticized Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik
Pak politician, current Interior Minister under the Gilani administration. Malik is a former Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) intelligence officer who rose to head the FIA during Benazir Bhutto's second tenure. He later joined the Pak Peoples Party and was chief security officer to Bhutto. Malik was tossed from his FIA job in 1998 after documenting the breath-taking corruption of the Sharif family. By unhappy coincidence Näwaz Shärif became PM at just that moment and Malik moved to London one step ahead of the button men.
and termed him a compulsive liar and a threat to Pakistain's security.

He said he had already told his party leadership that Malik could not be relied upon. He said that only one person is responsible for all killings in Bloody Karachi and that person is Rehman Malik.

Mirza leveled serious allegations on Muttahida Quami Movement and its chief Altaf Hussain. He termed the MQM and its head responsible for murders in Bloody Karachi. He accused the Sindh Governor Ishratul Ibad of patronizing hit mans.

He revealed that the police department was highly corrupt and that cop shoppes in Bloody Karachi are being auctioned to the highest bidders.

Zulfiqar Mirza alleged that during a meeting in London MQM chief Altaf Hussain had told him that America and world powers had decided to break up Pakistain and he (Altaf Hussain) had supported their idea.

He claimed that Altaf Hussain had demanded disbanding of ISI. He further alleged that MQM was patronizing killers and criminals. He also claimed that journalist Wali Khan Baber was also killed by the MQM.

He said he was sorry for his earlier comments for the people who had migrated from India. He said he respects Urdu speaking people and that many of his close relatives are also Urdu speaking.

He said that those people who want to breakup Pakistain are pitiful. He hoped that the Chief Justice of Pakistain Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry would summon him in the hearing of the case regarding Bloody Karachi murders.

Zulfiqar Mirza said that he would remain a loyal worker of the PPP. He said if something happened to him those behind the Bloody Karachi killings and those behind the murder of Dr Imran Farooq would be responsible for it. He said that he would spend the rest of his life fighting for the rights of the oppressed people of Sindh.
